Join us at the Pember Library in Granville for a series of workshops that will teach a variety of creative and fun projects for seniors. Each Friday from April 7- May 5 at 10 AM, we will sponsor a class in a different art form. Your creations will be yours to take home. You may sign up for one or all of the classes.

Classes are open to men or women with preference being given to senior citizens.  These classes for adults are made possible by a grant from the Washington County Home for Aged Women.

On April 7, Jo-Ann Nadeau will show you techniques for creating imaginative Easter Cards. Besides being inexpensive, handmade, unique cards make a wonderful personal gift.

Kris Gibson will show us a new twist on dying eggs by repurposing silk ties on April 14.

On April 21, Ardyce Bresett will show you techniques for folding book pages into a sculpture.

Zentangle has become a worldwide passion that now has uses in stress reduction, education, and therapy. Bernadette Hoffman will lead you in creating structured designs through drawing various patterns on April 28.

On May 5, learn why researchers and art therapists alike have touted the calming benefits of adult coloring books.

Registration is suggested so we have plenty of materials on hand. Please call the library at 518 642-2525 to register. All classes will take place in the main room of the library. There is an exterior ramp for accessibility to the first floor on the parking lot side of the building.

Dylan O’Leary, a local science expert will join us to view two short videos and discuss the topics and recommended books. We will have several copies of the books available for checkout at the library before each program, but you do not need to read the book to attend the program. Each program promises to be engaging and thought-provoking, and we hope you will join us!

The third in the series will be held on Sunday, March 19 at 1:00 PM. This public program leads our community on an exploration of the theme of survival. As humans, we’re driven to find a way to survive, whether trapped in a life threatening situation or competing in a sport. Our instincts urge us to push our limits to make it through,
one way or another.

In subsequent discussions, we will explore how humans push the limits of nature with TC Boyle’s book “When the Killing’s Done.”

Our library has just received a gift of 100 new children’s books, ranging from pre-kindergarten through early readers. These books were a donation from the Brownstone Book Fund, a private foundation in New York City, interested in fostering early reading, a love of books and encouraging parents and children to read together. Come to the library to explore and enjoy our new collection.

This program is an investigation into how humans have continuously sought to expand their own knowledge and to pass it on to others. Whether through oral traditions and primitive technologies, or through new high tech advances, we constantly push our limits for gathering, archiving, and transmitting knowledge.

In subsequent discussions, we will explore how humans push the limits of nature with TC Boyle’s book “When the Killing’s Done,” and push the limits of survival with Clive Cussler’s book “Arctic Drift.”

The Pember Library and Museum will host an open workshop along with a display of workshop art – “Art in the Making” on Friday, February 3 at First Friday.

“Workshops are vital places for artists to hone their vision and skills,” said Pember Board President Mary King. “First Friday will be both a workshop and an exhibition, with open call for artists at all levels of experience to participate or submit work at all stages of completion for the show.”

The workshop demonstration will consist of drawing and painting from a special still life subject from the Pember Museum, with materials supplied by the Museum. Workshop art in any medium may be submitted for the exhibition, which will run through February. Artwork need not be framed.

First Friday would not be First Friday without live music, and we are pleased to have Phil Hoyt back in the saddle to entertain with his guitar and traditional country songs.

Across the footbridge, the Slate Valley Museum will be opening their exhibition “Artists of the Slate Valley”, works of area elementary and high school students inspired by slate and living in the Slate Valley

First Friday starts at 7:00 p.m. and runs until 9:00. First Friday is always free.
