Starting September 13, join us at the Pember every Tuesday morning at 10 AM for some stories, games and activities for preschool children and their caregivers.

The Pember Peapods will be led by Holly and Carol. Our first six weeks of programs will focus on colors of the rainbow.

The night air is getting chillier and Halloween is just around the corner…The Pember Library and Museum and the Slate Valley Museum are teaming up to host their Third Annual Halloween Party and Zombie Walk. ZOMBIE WALK III will take place during the October First Friday event, October 7, from 7 to 9 pm at both museums.

“Last year’s Zombie Walk was such a huge hit, with over 400 people turning out, we are excited to host it again”, said Krista Rupe, Slate Valley Museum ’s Executive Director. “This year’s event promises to be even more amazing with an expanded lineup at both museums. In addition to a longer zombie parade route, there will be a Zombie Ball, spooky jack o’lanterns, Halloween art, music, treats, special décor and other terrifying surprises.”

There will be live music and a light show at the Pember, where zombies can feast on free “finger” sandwiches, jelly eyeballs, wormy hot dogs, bloody punch, and other delicacies of the undead. Eerie characters will roam the library and a video of ghouls on screen will be projected in the library crypt. Make-up stations will be available to have you look your worst.

“Zombies are a growing presence in the region and demographics are indicating that they will soon rule the world,” said Pember pollster Rob McGuire. “If you are a Zombie or would like to train as one, you owe it to your future to show up on the 7th. It will be a night to die for.”

At the Slate Museum there will be a monster mash with dancing to the most haunting songs around and a Spooky Jack O’Lantern contest with prizes. Carved Pumpkins can be dropped off from October 5-7 from 1-5pm .

“Halloween, originated from Ireland , immigrant children would decorate their faces with soot and dress up to scare the new arrivals to the neighborhood.” said Molly Biggs Celani SVM Board President.

Festivities start out at the Pember at 7pm and continue at SVM at 8pm after the Zombie Walk down Main Street .

RATCHET AND CLANK

Oddball alien Ratchet (voice of James Arnold Taylor) and his brainy robot sidekick Clank (David Kaye) embark on their biggest adventure ever in this adaptation of the video-game franchise by Insomniac Games, which explores the characters’ origin story as they work together to defend the Solana Galaxy from the evil Chairman Drek (Paul Giamatti). John Goodman, Bella Thorne, and Sylvester Stallone also lend their voices to this animated adventure directed by Jericca Cleland and Kevin Munroe.

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES :
Mark S. Waters’s adaptation of the popular fantasy novels The Spiderwick Chronicles tells the tale of the Graces, a family who must adapt to their new strange surroundings. As the story begins, twin brothers Jared and Simon, along with their sister Mallory and their mother, move away from the big city to a mansion owned by their uncle. When a series of strange happenings suggest that Jared may be causing a number of disturbances, the siblings band together to figure out what is going on. Soon they discover the magical history of the property.

RANGO:
A pet chameleon who has lived his entire life in the confines of a cozy glass terrarium discovers adventure beyond his wildest imagination in this animated Western adventure from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. When we first meet Rango (voice of Johnny Depp), the sheltered pet chameleon is safe in his terrarium, and embarking on epic adventures through the power of imagination. Then, suddenly, his safe existence is irrevocably upended thanks to a bump in the road that sends him soaring out of a car window and right onto the searing-hot asphalt of a desert highway. On the advice of a wise armadillo who relays the story of the Spirit of the West, our conical-eyed hero sets out in search of a town called Dirt, narrowly escaping a hungry hawk and encountering a self-sufficient pioneer named Beans (voice of Isla Fisher) along the way. Upon arriving in the dusty desert town, Rango wanders into the local bar and convinces the townspeople that he’s a notorious gunslinger with a lightning-fast trigger finger. When one of the locals challenges Rango to a showdown on Main Street, the hawk that menaced our hero on his way to town shows up looking for a rematch, and ends up beak-down in the dirt. Convinced that Rango is the real deal, the Mayor (voice of Ned Beatty) decides to name the brave chameleon their new sheriff. But Rango’s honeymoon in Dirt is short-lived when bandits steal the town’s entire supply of water, and the newly christened sheriff forms a posse in order to get it back. Little do they realize they were all being manipulated by one greedy power-monger who’s determined to keep the people of Dirt under his thumb with the help of a diabolical villain named Rattlesnake Jake (voice of Bill Nighy) whose Gatling-gun tail makes Swiss cheese of all challengers. Now, if Rango can just locate the Spirit of the West (voice of Timothy Olyphant) and summon the courage to realize his true potential, perhaps he can finally free the people of Dirt from the tyranny that binds them, and discover his true destiny under the scorching desert sun.

NANNY MCPHEE:
A nanny reveals ways of making children behave that are much more effective than a time-out in this fantasy comedy based on the “Nurse Matilda” books for children by Christianna Brand. Near the dawn of the twentieth century, Mr. Brown (Colin Firth) is a widower who must tend to his business as an undertaker while looking after his brood of seven children. Brown’s offspring are a singularly ill-mannered lot who have managed to drive away 17 different nannies when their father arranges for one Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) to help out with the children. McPhee is an strange looking woman with a large nose, protruding teeth, and pock-marked skin, but it isn’t long before the kids realize she has magical powers and isn’t afraid to use them to help keep them in line. While the children aren’t taken with McPhee’s insistence on such things as saying “please” and listening to their elders, it becomes clear everyone has bigger things to worry about. Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury) has insisted that if Mr. Brown cannot find a new wife within a month, she’ll take custody of one of the children and cut off Brown’s inheritance, and while Brown and the widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie) seem fond of one another, his ineptitude in courtship seems to insure he’ll never get her to the altar. But while the Brown Children realize Nanny McPhee is a formidable opponent, she can also be a valuable ally as they learn to make use of her talents by being better children; they also discover that as they behave better, she begins to look less frightening. Emma Thompson, who played the title role in Nanny McPhee, also wrote the film’s screenplay.
