Join us at the Pember Library Wednesday, August 1, at 6:00 PM as David J. Pitkin discusses New York State legends, folklore and ghost stories. Pitkin tells us he has recently collected a super strange story from Middle Granville, that will be featured in his next (2014) book of NYS Ghosts.
Retired teacher and author David J. Pitkin has sought solutions to mysteries throughout his life. In the 1960s he became fascinated with the workings of the unconscious mind and on the growing evidence for ghosts and hauntings: consciousness surviving body death. Since hearing a ghost (later identified as a suicide from 1940) walking in a haunted barn in 1968, and visiting the “Riley House” in Saratoga Springs, NY, in 1978, he has experienced a number of paranormal phenomena. Over the years, he has collected over 800 folktales of hauntings and apparitions, in the Caribbean, Canada, the U.S., and is now interviewing and investigating haunted houses around the world. Many of these early experiences are detailed in his haunted house books, Ghosts of the Northeast, and his recent works: Haunted Saratoga County, New York State Ghosts, Vol.1 and NY State Ghosts, Vol. 2.

Conducting ghost research for forty years at many reputedly haunted sites in New York State, New England, and Canada, he has become a philosopher lecturing on death, near-death experiences and survival of death. A resident of Chestertown, NY, in the Adirondack Mountains, Pitkin lectures widely on parapsychology and metaphysical themes, including ghost stories from his books on haunted houses. His goal is to enlighten others, but not frighten them.
Following eight years of travel and research, Pitkin published New England Ghostsin 2010. This is a collection of over 135 New England tales gathered in the six states of that area. He is currently working on a third volume of NY State stories, a single volume of stories from Warren County, NY, where he lives (scheduled for publication in autumn of 2012).

The Friends of the Pember Library and the Slate Valley Garden Club will again join together to present their annual Books, Buns, and Bouquets Sale. The event will take place at the Mary J. Tanner School on Rte. 22 in Middle Granville, NY on Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14, beginning at 9:00 am both days.
The Garden Club sale will feature many varieties of garden plants as well as baked goods. This is a great opportunity to add new plants to your garden and to sample delicious home baked treats.
The book sale will offer thousands of gently used fiction, non-fiction, and children’s books as well as AV materials, records, tapes, CD’s, and books on tape. Prices are $.25 for paperback books and $1.00 for hardcovers. Patrons can fill an entire bag we provide for only $1.00 on Saturday from 1 pm to 3 pm.
All of our books are stored at the Pember Library on West Main Street in Granville and we must transport them to the sale. We need the help and support of many volunteers to accomplish this task. If you are able to help, even for a short time, please join us at the Pember on Tuesday, July 10 at 9:00 am. We are in need of strong backs and large vehicles. If you are not able to move the boxes of books, we also need volunteers to unpack the boxes and help with the set up at the Mary J. Tanner School. We will be there on Tuesday, July 10 at 9:00 and also on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Any assistance you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Book donations are accepted anytime the library is open. This is the perfect time to clean out your bookshelves to make room for all the books you purchase at the sale. Please no encyclopedias, textbooks, or books that are destined for the dump. If you have large amounts of books to donate, it would be best to call ahead so that we can have someone on hand to help unload your vehicle. For information, call 518 642-2525.
Vampires, zombies, ghosts and monsters will be on your summer reading list. Night skies, nocturnal animals, murder mysteries and stories for after dark will also be featured. Join us at the Pember Library for fun programs, chats and snacks.
