Making Ends Meet

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Washington County will present a 2-hour Money Management Workshop at the Pember Library.

Come share some ideas on:

  • setting financial goals
  • getting the most for your money
  • developing a spending plan
  • ways to reduce your utility bills

All attendees will receive an assortment of money management tools.

The two-hour class will be presented twice on July 15.

Please preregister by calling 746-2560. Individuals with special needs requiring accommodations who wish to attend this program should let us know at  the time of registration.

Pember Presents: Tales ‘n Tunes

Splish! Splash!  Tales ‘n Tunes invites young readers to wade in with stories and songs about the sea and all the characters and creatures encountered there. Come to the Pember Library at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 22 to enjoy a sing-along, clap-along high-participation program. Tales ‘n Tunes will chart the waters, sail over the ocean and explore the bottom of the sea in story and song. Audience members can catch the reading wave, then drop anchor for some fishy fun with Tales ‘n Tunes.  It’s an exciting and enriching musical story event, complete with puppets and participation, that encourages summer reading program participants to hook the reading catch of the day. Tales ‘n Tunes is a musical storytelling duo from the Capital District of New York State with twenty years of experience presenting programs in schools, libraries, museums, and at community events and festivals. They perform stories, primarily from the folk tradition, with original songs creatively integrated in them to allow for audience participation. They also feature songs between stories. Carol Connolly and Don Darmer bring tales and tunes from around the world to audiences of all ages. They are high-energy performers and their programs engage children and have them singing and clapping along. Adult listeners are enchanted by their musical stories. Together, they bring folk and fairy tales to life for their audiences.

Because of the book sale, we will not be having story time on July 10.

We will have stories on the other Saturdays in July as follows:

July 17 – Ice Cream!

July 24 – Finances for Children. Theresa Macura from TD Bank will be here for a special story time and will explain the bank’s summer reading program. Get $10 for reading 10 books! (kids 18 and younger).

July 31 – Linda will have a “Make a Splash” program at this time.

PBS Kids Raising Readers Library Corner

Join us June 26 at 10:30 AM for the grand opening of the Pember Library’s PBS Kids Raising Readers Library Corner. The Pember Library has joined forces with WMHT through the NYS Ready To Learn Statewide Planning Project to install a special, permanent spot in the library that gives children and families the opportunity to strengthen literacy skills through fun, engaging multi-media platforms.

Representatives from WMHT will be at the library June 26 at 10:30 AM to demonstrate the library corner activities and to familiarize participants with PBS Island readytolearnreading.org, a Web site with games designed to help kids master literacy skills at eight different levels. The Web site measures and tracks a child’s progress and provides a report to the parent or caregiver.

The Library Corner materials are designed to help families with children ages 2 to 8 years develop early literacy and beginning reading skills and includes 30 interactive reading activities and materials featuring the friendly PBS characters children love, designed to provide an inviting place where children and their caregivers can explore words and letters together.

These activities are based on PBS KIDS Raising Readers programs Sesame Street, Word World, Super Why!, Between the Lions, Martha Speaks and The Electric Company.

The Pember Library was one of 27 in New York chosen to receive these national resources. The PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner will provide area kids with new opportunities to read and engage through hands-on activities.

All activities — including self-directed worksheets, online videos, parent-led activities, and more — are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations, encompassing skills such as letter recognition, print awareness, and vocabulary instruction.

This national literacy effort focuses on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care centers, and in the community.

Pember Presents: Domino the Great

The summer reading fun continues at the Pember Library with “The Splish Splash Reading Show” on July 1 at 6:00 PM. Join us as Domino the Great presents an action packed program that will grab the attention of children (and fun loving adults too) with amazing magic tricks, hilarious family-appropriate humor, tons of audience particiDominopation, music and more.

Domino says, “This is not your ordinary magic show…” There are magic tricks throughout the program to capture and keep the attention of the kids. The tricks are used in a special way to teach the children about the fun of reading and signing up for our summer reading program.

Laughter is a sure fire way to insure success and get the kids in our community interested in books. A ton of side splitting and age-appropriate humor is used to keep the audience laughing and having a great time from start to finish.

Both boys and girls get to help make the “magic” happen during this explosion of fun, laughter and learning. One lucky beach bum (volunteer from the audience) will even get to float 3 feet in the air!

Make a splash this summer at your local library — Teen Summer Reading Program

The Pember Library at 33 West Main St in Granville will kick off the teen summer reading program, Make Waves @ Your Library. Join in the fun of Summer Reading! Have a slice of pizza and a soda and find out what we have planned for the summer! For information, call 518-642-2525.

All programs involve water in some way and there is the possibility each week that someone will get wet!

Public libraries across the State encourage reading through the New York Statewide Summer Reading Program. In 2010, Make a Splash @ Your Library will be the children’s theme. Linda has programs planned through July and a party in August for those who participate. Dawn will coordinate Make Waves @ Your Library, this year’s teen theme. The adult summer reading theme is Water Your Mind, Read. Detailed schedules for each program will be available at the Pember Library.
