A Good Yarn Program

Beginner and experienced knitters and crocheters are encouraged to meet at the library between 3:30 and 5:00 PM on Wednesdays to teach each other and to learn from each other. The library will provide space for crafters to meet and to socialize while working on their yarn projects. The library will have a limited amount of yarn, crochet hooks, and knitting needles for people to try the crafts before they invest money in needed equipment. Basic stitches will be taught and more advanced techniques can be researched through books and online resources. The first stitches learned will be used to make small items like dishcloths. Pember Presents: Digging up History

Join us at the Pember Library at 6pm on Thursday, August 20, to hear David Starbuck talk about his work as an archaeologist in the Lake George area. Much 18th century military history took place in this part of New York. Starting about 1755, British and French troops along with Native Americans battled to gain control of what was to become the United States. Summertime archaeological digs by professionals and students have unearthed some interesting clues to what happened here over 200 years ago.

Starbuck, a part-time Chestertown resident, is a professor of anthropology at Plymouth State University. He has written several books about his local work including “The legacy of Fort William Henry: resurrecting the past.”

First Friday

Bad art has been flowing steadily into the Pember, and our second Annual “Dreadful Art” show, scheduled to open at August First Friday, promises to outdo last year’s event! Together with “Tacky Taxidermy” from the Pember Museum’s vaults, and a glorious sampling from MOBA’s (the Museum of Bad Art) permanent collection, we now have over 30 works of ‘art so bad, it’s good’ on hand to wow and delight First Friday goers. “MOBA’s works are must see and ‘Sweet Lips’ defies description,” said Mary King, Pember Board President. “I don’t know how they come up with this stuff.”

In addition, at least fifteen works will be for sale at very low prices, with entire proceeds going to support the Pember. Think of it…“Blue Sunrise”, “Sibling Rivalry” or “Grandma Jenner” can be yours for good.”

The Da Prof N Starr with their “Oinkestra” will provide live music for the event. Food and refreshments will be available, plus balloting for “Best of the Worst”. Come cast your vote and join in the fun.

First Friday is August 7th, from 7 to 9 pm. Some of the show will remain up for the month of August.
