Pember First Friday Features: Artist Reni Wulfken, “Songer-singwriter” Neal Herr, and Lavenlair Farm.

The Pember is pleased to welcome German-born artist Reni Wulfken for a first time exhibit at the July First Friday on July 7. She lived and studied painting in Venice, Florida and is newly returned to this area.

Reni has been drawing and painting since childhood and recently studied with Canadian artist Walter Burden. Reni is inspired by subjects from the natural world, and interprets nature through color and light. “When I paint, the world goes away. I am in a place of total relaxation, and there is a serenity there that no other endeavor can match. It is from this place that I create my best work.”

Her subject matter includes flowers, fruit, birds and other animals, as well as portraits of human subjects. Reni paints primarily in acrylics on paper, canvas, and slate, but occasionally does multi-media paintings.

Reni is a three-time exhibitor at the Venice Art Center in Florida, and more recently at Stone Valley Arts in Poultney, Vermont.

Summer is here and Diane and David Allen of Lavenlair Farm will be at First Friday with a wide array of lavender inspired bouquets, soaps and lotions. Be sure to ask them about the four thousand lavender plants in the 100 foot diameter meditative labyrinth they built on their farm.

“Songer-singwriter” Neal Herr will be performing. Neal is an award-winning writer, director, composer, producer and teacher of musical theater who has written over 500 original songs and a dozen musicals. A frequent performer, producer and music director at Hudson River Music Hall, involved in tributes to Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young and the Bee Gees, he’s recorded over ten CDs of original music at Lylac Studios in South Glens Falls, NY. This summer he’ll be directing kids at the YMCA in an original kids improv musical, Makin’ It Up. He loves kids, dogs, singing and libraries, in no particular order.

First Friday is July 7, from 7 to 9 pm and is free.

Our adult summer reading program includes this challenge! Stop in to the library July 1 or after to pick up your game sheet.

Your mission should you decide to accept it, is to complete a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line by reading or watching the items in the boxes. Fill in the requested information for each. (No duplicates allowed!) Turn in the completed card for entry in a grand prize drawing (to be announced at end of summer reading program).

Join us at the Pember, 33 West Main St in Granville, for “Draw with Jen” July 11, July 18, and July 25 at 1PM.  Jennifer Dashef will be sketching some of the animals in the museum and she would love to have you join her. This is not a class but a fun get-together. There will be some books about the animal you are drawing and depending on the age of the artist, possibly a story time, or some educational info on the animal.

Benefits of summer reading programs for teens:
• Many teenagers find enjoyment in reading
• Having high levels of literacy are needed for higher education and future employment
• Most standardized tests that teenagers will take include a reading comprehension portion.

Learn with Linda! Our summer reading program is designed to encourage elementary-aged children to keep reading during summer vacation. We hope to prevent the “summer slide” so children will go back to school this fall ready to read and learn .

• Children are motivated to read.
• Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library.
• Children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.
• Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.
• Children have access to experiences through which they can learn to work cooperatively.

Summer Reading with Carol and Holly will give early experience with books to children ages newborn to about 5.

Benefits of summer reading for early learners:
• Young children will gain self-confidence and a love for reading, books, and the library
• The groundwork will be laid for children to become lifelong readers and learners
• Completion of the program will give children a sense of accomplishment and belonging
• Parents and caregivers will gain knowledge about early literacy and learning activities at the library that they can continue at home
• The library may become a community destination for more families during the summer

65 Owls, 70 Bobcats, Moose Crossing Jazz at Pember First Friday

135 renderings of owl and bobcat will be on display for June First Friday at the Pember Library and Museum in Granville, NY. Works on paper by the third and sixth graders of Granville Elementary School will be featured at the show.

Moose Crossing, Poultney’s hottest jazz band will be back for First Friday. Zak Hampton on sax, Tim Duch on piano, and Johnny Reiter on bass will rock the night with bop and swing.

Be sure to check the specials of the many Main Street businesses that will be staying open late for First Friday.

First Friday is June 2, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free.
