Dreadful Art Retrospective and Open Call at Pember First Friday August 3, 7-9PM

August First Friday at the Pember Library and Museum in Granville, NY will feature Deadful Art Cinco, a Retrospective. “Dreadful Art is a contrarian show that recognizes and ennobles the pitfalls along the path of artistic creation, said show assistant Gigi Zeitler. “It’s inspiration, talent or technique on the wrong track or in the wrong hands. The individual artists put a lot of themselves into these paintings, and there’s a strangeness, beauty and humor in seeing all of them together. It’s always great fun.”

This year, there will be over fifty works on display, including some gems from the past, and a silent auction with most bidding starting at one dollar.

Ballots for “Worst of the Show” will be available at the Pember. Open call for submissions runs until Thursday, August 2. Submissions may be dropped off until then at the Library. Works will be sold off at 8 pm the night of the show.

A special play list of recorded music to complement the décor will be part of the show.

Refreshments will be provided.

First Friday is August 3, from 7 to 9 pm and is a free event.

Fresh Food Collective

Next week the Fresh Food Collective, a farm to library program distributing fresh produce will begin its pilot year, and we’re delighted to have Comfort Food Community as a partner. Three of our member libraries (Pember Library & Museum, Schuylerville Public Library, and Whitehall Free Library), have stepped forward to test our idea — that for libraries to be able to change lives, we need to help people meet basic needs and have healthier lifestyles.

It may seem counter-intuitive that a region with farms could be a food desert, but transportation and low income result in limited access to fresh, affordable food. At the same time, many farms have surplus product. In the US, as much as 40% of the food produced each year is wasted. The Comfort Food Community mobilizes volunteers to glean local farms, making fresh, local produce available through its food pantry, mobile distribution, and now through our libraries.

The idea behind the Fresh Food Collective is simple: Reduce food waste while connecting people to fresh, local fruits and vegetables at member libraries, building healthier communities and opportunities for new voices to enter our collective conversations. For libraries, the payoff is huge — new people will come to libraries, allowing us to build relationships with new families, introducing them to the range of services we provide. After many years of deliberation and planning, The Pember Library and Museum of Natural History is ready to break ground with a much needed elevator that will make it possible for the elderly and persons with disabilities to visit the Museum. The project will also provide fire stairs for emergency egress and make the Pember building fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

This is a milestone project that will make the Pember’s resources and century old collections available to everyone and further the Pember’s strength as a vital cultural anchor in the upstate region, bringing tourism and new possibilities for visitor experience.

The elevator and stairs will be housed in a new addition on the parking lot side of the building, replacing the existing ramp. The addition will be faced in marble matching the style, features and color of the original building. Construction will begin in July. The project may be viewed here:

We have raised 80 percent of project costs through grants and various sources of funding, but still need additional finances. We are asking for your help to complete this worthy project. Please donate whatever you can to help the Pember. Your contribution at this time is critical.

Summer Reading Kick-Off at the Pember! Libraries Rock

The Summer Reading Program for parents and children in grades K-6 will begin on Saturday, June 23, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Designed to encourage elementary- aged children to keep reading during summer vacation. The program will follow the statewide theme, “Libraries Rock.”

Hunter Bassett, of Granville, will orchestrate the program locally. It will encompass all things rock from geology to Rock n’ Roll.

Granville’s ninth grade entertainer Adam Andrews will start the program with a “rock music” performance.

A special craft will be available for children and delicious refreshments for all.

Additional children’s programs include: – Saturday, July 7, 11 a.m. to noon, slate painting – Saturday, July 21, 11 a.m. to noon, sand bottles and rock mosaics Programs are free, but preregistering is appreciated, due to limited space.

The Winds of Change

“The Winds of Change: The Evolution of Warfare as Experienced by the 123rd New York Volunteer Infantry.” Was the American Civil War the last Napoleonic War or a modern war? What transformations took place between 1862-1865 that changed warfare as experienced by the Washington County Boys during their service in the federal army? A detailed analysis will explore those changes that were wrought by the American Civil War as viewed through the eyes of our citizen soldiers.

This informative presentation is a new perspective not previously presented by the speaker. The presenter is Michael Russert, a Civil War historian, a member of the Company of Military Historians, has a Masters Degree plus thirty hours in Nineteenth Century American Studies. He has published over two hundred book reviews and is presently completing a book examining the role played by the 123rd New York in the Gettysburg Campaign. A teacher for thirty-five years, he served as the Coordinator of The New York State Veteran Oral History Program.

The Presentation will be held in the Library. Refreshments will be served.
