The library will be closed today , Tuesday, March 19, because of the late winter storm. Lucy got plenty of food and water yesterday so she is fine. We’ll open again tomorrow at 1:00 PM.

Book Club

The book club will read biographies this month, reader’s choice. I would like to suggest the following. These describe how books affected the writers’ lives.

The Reading Promise by Alice Ozma. A series of vignettes describes how the author’s father challenged himself to read aloud to her for one hundred consecutive nights when she was in fourth grade and how they decided to continue “the streak” until the day she left for college.

The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. Recounts how the author and his mother read and discussed books during her chemotherapy treatments, describing how the activity involved a wide range of literary genres, furthered their appreciation for literature, and strengthened their bond.

The Man Who Loved Books Too Much by Allison Hoover Bartlett. In telling the true story of book thief John Charles Gilkey and the man who was driven to capture him, journalist Allison Hoover Bartlett explores the larger history of book passion, collection, and theft through the ages. .

Books by Larry McMurtry. The author recounts his lifelong love affair with books, from his largely “bookless” boyhood and discovery of literature as a young man, to the evolution of his writing career and his passion as a book collector who opens bookstores of rare and collectible volumes.

Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. The author describes growing up in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the group of young women who came together at her home in secret every Thursday to read and discuss great books of Western literature.

My Reading Life by Pat Conroy. Bestselling author Pat Conroy acknowledges the books that have shaped him and celebrates the profound effect reading has had on his life.

How Reading Changed My Life by Anna Quindlen. Reading lists of some of the author’s favorite books accompany her thoughts on the role of books and reading in her life.

Maps and Legends by Michael Chabon. A series of linked essays analyzes works of literature important to the author, argues for the importance of enjoying a diverse range of reading options, and explores the author’s own writings from a perspective of personal history.

Join us for a series of genealogy programs by Kathleen Moore. The first course explains how to begin a genealogy search — without spending money. It highlights the excellent free sites available, and the subscription sites available at many libraries. Kathleen will also go over the basics for starting searches in different countries.

Pember Board Meeting

A meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Pember Library and Museum will be held on the third Wednesday of each month at the Pember. This is a regular meeting and open to the public.

Computers for Seniors

Barb Young will again be teaching the popular “computers for seniors” at the Pember Library. Classes will run from 10:30AM to 12:00PM Wednesdays and Fridays from April 24 through May 10.

Classes will cover internet and email, word processing, and using the library card catalog with databases.

You must pre-register for the series of classes. Class size is limited to eight people. Please call the library to register or for more information 518-642-2525.

Quilling Class

Pat O will teach us more quilling or feel free to join us if you have a project you are working on and just like to chat while you are crafting.

Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. Pre-registration is not required, materials provided. Beginners welcome. For information, call 518-642-2525.

Navigating the “Card Catalog”

“Where is the card catalog?” is a frequent question here at the library. Many people are surprised that our answer is “it’s on the computer.”

Bring your favorite stuffed animal and join us at the Pember Library for “tea,” story time, and a “beary” special craft project.

This lucky bear will go home with the winner of the drawing.

Tax Forms

We have basic NYS tax forms (IT-201, IT-201 ATT, IT-203, and instruction booklets for IT-201 & IT-203) available at the library free of charge. Or you can go to http://www.tax.ny.gov/forms/ to get all NYS forms ($.25 per page if you use our printers and ink).

We do not have Federal tax forms but you can download them from the internet, ($.25 per page if you use our printers and ink). Go to http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/ where you can access and acquire both electronic and print media.
