Exploring Credit / Debt Management Issues

UPDATE: the 3:00 class has been canceled.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Washington County will present a two-hour Money Management class at the Pember  Library.

Topics to be discussed:

  • ways to establish good credit
  • how to make credit work for you
  • understanding your credit report
  • common pitfalls to avoid
  • strategies for paying down debt

The class will be presented twice on November 5.

Please register by calling 746-2560. Individuals with special needs requiring accommodations who wish to attend this program should let us know at  the time of registration.

Pember Presents

1812: New York’s War, New York’s Impetus

A lecture by Robert W. Arnold III

While the Battles of Sackets Harbor or Plattsburg do not carry the cachet of a Gettysburg or Saratoga, the War of 1812, now approaching its bicentennial, was very much New York’s War. Much of the war was fought on our soil or on our waters. New Yorkers responded to the conflict militarily and otherwise and the war exposed serious inadequacies in the state’s infrastructure and the nation’s military capacity. This presentation with slides and period quotes examines the impact of the war and its aftermath on the people of New York and the public improvements roads and canals made partly in response to the war.

Robert W. Arnold III is a career public historian at the New York State Archives. He was Albany County Historian, a historical archaeologist and is a Commissioner of Historic Resources for the City of Albany. Arnold teaches American, New York State and regional history at the College of Saint Rose and other colleges.

Craft Classes

Classes in October will be

  • October 30 – knit or crochet washcloth
  • October 31 – silk ribbon ornament

For the knitted washcloth, bring a ball of cotton yarn in whatever color(s) you like.  You will need regular knitting needles, any size from 4-8.

For the crocheted frog washcloth, you will need a ball of green cotton yarn and small amounts of white and black cotton yarn. The sample in the photo here is a work in progress. You will need a regular crochet hook about size G.

Since gauge is not important in these projects, there is some leeway in the size. This class is free.

For the silk ribbon ornament, you will need to bring an embroidery hoop, embroidery needles, and $2.00 for the supplies.  Our supplies will include ribbon, felt and backing material.

Apple Dessert Contest results

First Place in the “Anything but Pie apple dessert contest” went to Robyn Lipshutz with her Apple Caramel Bars. Judi Brown’s Jewish Apple Cake was the second place winner with Theresa Loomis’ “On a whim!” sauteed apples  and Tamika Carty’s Gala Concord cookies tied for third.
Sixteen entries, six incredible judges, a cool emcee, and four great prizes made the Pember Library’s first annual “Anything But Pie” contest a success!Robyn&JoAnn
