Granville Reads
In order to promote reading in our community, we are holding a “reading flash mob” during a performance at the Summer Concert Series.
We will ask participants to show up at the Veterans Memorial Park on July 28 at 7:00 PM with a book, magazine, e-book, or other reading material to show the world that reading matters. When the announcer asks participants what is happening, hold up your book and all exclaim “Granville Reads!”

Book Club reading “Russian Roulette”

In 1917, a band of communist revolutionaries stormed the Winter Palace of Tsar Nicholas II—a dramatic and explosive act marking that Vladimir Lenin’s communist revolution was now underway. But Lenin would not be satisfied with overthrowing the tsar. His goal was a global revolt that would topple all Western capitalist regimes — starting with the British Empire.

Pember Book Club
The Pember Book Club will be discussing The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition by Caroline Alexander.

The survival of Hurley’s remarkable images is scarcely less miraculous: The original glass plate negatives, from which most of the book’s illustrations are superbly reproduced, were stored in hermetically sealed cannisters that survived months on the ice floes, a week in an open boat on the polar seas, and several more months buried in the snows of a rocky outcrop called Elephant Island. Finally Hurley was forced to abandon his professional equipment; he captured some of the most unforgettable images of the struggle with a pocket camera and three rolls of Kodak film.

1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
SETS CHILDREN ON THE PATH TO SUCCESS . . .
ONE BOOK AT A TIME
Families are invited to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the Pember Library. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years and provide their children essential early literacy skills.
Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is available to all families with children between the ages of birth and five years. Registration is open. Starter Kits for “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” will be available December 1.

Libri Grant
The Pember Library recently received 82 new books for toddlers through high school. The books were awarded to the library through the Libri Foundation of Eugene, Oregon “Books for Children Grant.” The grant is a matching funds grant in which the library can receive up to $1050 worth of books provided they raise one third of the cost outside of the library’s regular budget process. An anonymous donor provided the matching funds and Bill Strawbridge and Meg Wallhagen donated an additional $350.00 worth of math and science books.
The new books include both fiction and nonfiction. Historical and scientific topics are covered in the nonfiction. The fiction consists of picture books for little ones, early reader books, and juvenile and young adult fiction. There should be something for everyone. The books are processed and ready for checkout. They are shelved with the rest of the children and youth collections.
The Libri Foundation, which awards the Books for Children Grant, was established in 1989 with the sole purpose of helping rural libraries acquire new, quality, hardcover books for children and young people. Since October of 1990, the foundation has donated over $3,500,000 worth of new books to more than 2,600 libraries in 49 states.

Fun Erupts at the Pember
February through May, the Pember Library and the Pember Museum will present several joint programs. Each program will feature books, science and a fun project or video.
On February 18, 3:30 to 4:30 PM, “Fun Explodes” at the Pember. There will be a volcano competition between the library and museum. Vote on your favorite and watch them erupt. Touch real volcanic glass; see a short video on volcanoes and find more information using books available in the library.
This discovery program is free, open to school-age children and held in the library, 33 West Main St, Granville NY.
