Barb Young will again be teaching the popular “computers for seniors” at the Pember Library. Classes will run from 10:00AM to 11:30AM Mondays and Fridays from December 7 through December 18.
Classes will cover internet and email, word processing, and using the library card catalog with databases.
You must pre-register for the series of classes. Class size is limited to eight people. Please call the library to register or for more information 518-642-2525.

The microfilm machine in the reference area is now up and running and prints from it look pretty readable. This machine also has a microfiche attachment. You can bring in your own microfiche to read (for example, some parts manuals are distributed in this way).
There is a second machine in the office which can be used as a reader. It has been cleaned and the electric film winder now works. Sorry, you cannot make prints from this machine.
Test your home, protect your family from Radon!
Radon is a gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. It occurs naturally in the earth, but can become a problem when it builds up indoors. It enters a home through cracks and openings in the foundation floor, walls and through openings around sump pumps.
According to the federal Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Although lung cancer can be treated, the survival rate is one of the lowest of all cancers. Radon is responsible for over 20,000 lung cancer deaths annually.
Homeowners can test their homes at any time; however, it is best to do so in the heating season when homes typically let in less outdoor air. It is important to remember that every home is different and should be tested for radon.
If the test shows that radon is a problem, simple inexpensive techniques may be all that is needed to reduce radon levels. There are contractors throughout the state who have met certain requirements and are trained to identify and fix radon problems in your home.
Washington County is a HIGH RADON AREA county. Within the county: Argyle, Granville, Greenwich, Jackson, and Salem are considered the highest concern.
Linda Law-Saunders of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Washington County will be giving a presentation about radon at the Pember Library in Granville on December 3 at 4 pm and again at 6 pm. Advanced registration is required. Please call CCE at 746-2560 or 1-800-548- 0881. Individuals with special needs requiring accommodations who wish to attend this program should let CCE know when registering.
A meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Pember Library and Museum will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Pember. This is a regular meeting and open to the public.

You can read the first few pages of these books when you sign up for the online book clubs. We send you a five-minute read in your email five days a week and by the end of the week, you can decide if the book is for you. We have some of the titles in our collection or you can request a copy of the book through our inter-library loan program.

The Friends of the Pember Library will meet to finalize plans for the December Open House.
We will continue to have a “knit-in” group at the library. People can come in every Friday (2PM) and work on their knit or crochet projects and get help or encouragement or just have someone to chat with while they work. The group can work on individual projects, but should also do some projects for charity.
We have over 60 hats to send to the neonatal intensive care unit at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington. We will work on a group afghan for the Haynes House beginning in January.
All knitters or crocheters welcome and donations of yarns or materials cheerfully accepted!

In celebration of her third birthday, the Rutland Animal Shelter will be here. There may be some kittens here who are waiting to be adopted and at least one puppy looking for a home.
