Free Publications from the Department of Education: Information on Safety, Crime and Violence in the Nation’s Schools

During the past several years the U.S. Department of Education has produced a variety of free information on the topics of safety, crime and violence in the Nation’s schools. The intended audience for this information is educators, administrators, safety officials and parents. All of the information is available at no cost from the ED Pubs website at http://www.edpubs.gov.

From the homepage of this site, select the link marked FIND PUBLICATIONS BY and select Subject. In the alphabetical list choose “S” for Safety.  This will display the complete list of the available publications, some of which may be downloaded online and others ordered for delivery by mail.

Publications available by mail may also be ordered by calling toll-free 1-877-4-ED-PUBS (1-877-433-7827), Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. (ET). Please note certain quantity limitations apply on printed publications.

Toys for Tots

UPDATE: as of 12-18-12 ~ The Toys for Tots collection has been picked up. Check with your local church if you still have items to donate.

We are a collection station for Toys for Tots. Bring new, unwrapped toys to the Pember.

The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Thanksgiving Holiday

The Library will be closing at 6:00pm on Wednesday, November 21 and will be closed for Thanksgiving. We will reopen on Tuesday, November 27 at 9:00 AM for our regular hours next week.

2012 Annual Dinner and Silent Auction

We are planning our annual dinner and silent auction which will be held at the Lake St Catherine Country Club. We are seeking donations of products or services that can be auctioned to raise funds for general operating costs.

All donations are tax deductible.

Dinner tickets can be purchased from us, $40 per person or $75 per couple.  You can bid by attending the dinner, or you can email or call us.  Email bids will be accepted up to 12:00pm on the day of the dinner.

Movie Night

We plan to have a movie at the Pember the third Friday of each month. We may add more movie times and children’s films once the program gets established.

Due to licensing restrictions, we can’t list the titles we will be showing online but there will be posters and bookmarks in the library. We plan to alternate classics with newer releases.

May’s movie is a story about friendship and war. Please call the Pember Library at 518 642-2525 for more information about our movie night.

 

Brainfuse JobNow

UPDATE: The New York State Library regretfully announces that its subscription to the JobNow™ database, including the Adult Learning Center made available as part of the online resources available through the NOVELny platform, ended on April 30, 2013.

JobNow is an innovative online service that provides expert resume help, real-time interview coaching and career advice. There are services to help with every step of a job search. The Adult Learning Center features test preparation (including GED and U.S. citizenship preparation), writing assistance, and study tools for math, reading and writing. Live, online one-on-one interaction with a tutor or job coach is available as part of JobNow and the Adult Learning Center. Live sessions can be conducted in English or Spanish. JobNow is made possible through a federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) award funded through the New York State Education Department/New York State Library. Tax Forms

We have basic NYS tax forms available at the library free of charge. We also have a binder with additional NYS forms that you can photocopy at $.15 per scan. (Forms and binder are located on the bottom shelf near the new and 7-day books.) Or you can go to http://www.tax.ny.gov/forms/ to get all NYS forms ($.25 per page if you use our printers and ink).

We do not have Federal tax forms but you can download them from the internet, ($.25 per page if you use our printers and ink). Go to http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/  where you can access and acquire both electronic and print media.

Changes for 2011 NYS taxpayers include:

The NYS tax form IT 150 Resident Income Tax Return (short form) has been discontinued. All full-year New York State residents must now use Form IT-201 to file and pay their taxes.

NYS taxpayers now have three ways to receive their NYS tax refund: debit card (new option), paper check and direct deposit to the person’s bank account. There is a brochure with information on the new debit card near the NYS forms.

We desperately need a dehumidifier for the cellar. The books stored for next year’s book sale need to be kept dry and in good condition.
