Pember Presents: The Independence Trail

Join us at the Pember Library July 15 at 6 PM to learn about the New York State Independence Trail. It will be a virtual tour of some of the most important sites of the French and Indian war and Revolutionary war — from restored forts and historic battlefields to grand government buildings and period homes.

The New York State Independence Trail is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Lake George, NY. The trail starts at Fort Chambly in Quebec and goes through Valcour Island in Lake Champlain, Crown Point and Ticonderoga, Roger’s Rock, and Whitehall (birthplace of the US Navy). Stops in the Lake George, Glens Falls and Queensbury areas include Fort William Henry, Fort George and Battlefield Park, Knox Trail, Bloody Pond, Halfway Brook, and Cooper’s Cave. The Revolutionary War Cemetery in Salem is also on the trail. There are about 30 more sites from Schuylerville and Saratoga south along the Hudson to NY City.

There will be a short video presentation and map brochures available. We can talk about some of the sites within easy driving distance of Granville and there will be books available if you want to learn more.

The program is part of the New York State Summer Reading Program, Explore New York, for teens and adults. All are welcome.

Karen Pillsworth has been enchanting audiences all over the Northeast with her stories for over 25 years. She has performed in libraries, camps, churches, parks, schools, historic sites and at festivals. She is regularly featured at Mohonk Mountain House and has shared her stories on National Public Radio.

Pember Presents: Jack and the Scarlet Runner Beanstalk: Gardening with Children

Join us at the Pember Wednesday evening, when Sue Kowaleski will talk about a few options for planting a little garden with/for children. She will have a powerpoint to show with some fun vegetables for adults to grow with children. There would still be time for participants to get a little garden in the ground after June 17. Think about kids picking beans they planted themselves to have for supper! Or carving their own jack-o-lantern in October after watching it grow all summer!

Library Launches Online Book Club

Finding a Great Book to Read Just Got Easier

So many books, so little time. For all those busy people, the Pember Library has a new service sponsored by the Friends of the Pember Library: an Online Book Club that delivers books electronically. Each day, Monday through Friday, the library e-mails subscribers a portion of a book that takes about 5-minutes to read. They’re able to read two or three chapters from a book during the week. If they like a book, they can check it out of the library.

Each week the library features new books, so if the current book is not one that interests you, the editor/moderator, Suzanne Beecher, encourages you to “hit the delete key without guilt”.  Suzanne also has a personal message at the beginning of the read every day. It is like getting a note from a close friend every day.

There’s a book club for just about everyone, including: fiction, non-fiction, romance, mystery, science fiction, audio, business, pre-publication (be the first to see these soon-to-be-released books), teen, good news, and thriller. Now you can discover great books, even if you’re too busy to visit the library.

On Mondays and Thursdays, Suzanne, your book club editor, offers a link to AuthorBuzz, where she introduces you to three or four authors and their books. Suzanne also holds giveaways where you can win funny or cool prizes–and once a month, Suzanne bakes homemade chocolate chip cookies for the winners of her monthly Chocolate Chip Cookie giveaway. This new service makes it easy for people to get back into the habit of reading. It only takes 5-minutes a day and it’s fun.

Ice Cream Social and Art Reception

Join us Saturday, June 6 from 2-5 PM, for Kid’s Day, the kick-off event in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Pember. Stewart’s has generously donated the fixings for kids to make their own ice cream sundaes. Other highlights of the day will be music with DJ Brent Tuttle and balloon animals and other activities with Melody the Clown. There will be goodie bags for the kids.

Artwork created by students at Mary J Tanner and Granville Elementary School will be on display all week in the Library and Museum.

Pember Presents

Dave Ruch will be giving a special concert entitled “Old-TimeTraditional & Historical Songs of New York State” on June 12 at 7 P. M. at the Pember Library, 33 West Main St in Granville, NY.

When we think of old-time ballads and songs handed down from generation to generation, we might think of places like Kentucky, or North Carolina, or the Ozark Mountains…….Did you know we’ve got them right here in the Empire State, too?

For this special concert, Ruch presents , and tells the stories behind, the songs of real-life “Yorkers” from days gone by — farmers, lumbermen, children, lake sailors, canallers and more — collected through considerable research and interpreted for all to enjoy with guitar, 5-string banjo, jaw harp and more!

A professional musician and educator based in Buffalo NY, Dave gives over 325 concerts & workshops each year for schools, libraries, folk festivals, historical societies, museums and community events across New York, Pennsylvania & Ohio.

This Speakers in the Humanities event, which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the support of the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Parade

Here’s a photo of Ryan and me waiting for the parade to begin. Thanks to Tiffany and Ryan for taking part in the parade (and pushing the carts). Thanks to Heather and Alyssa for their help with putting the cake together. Also thanks to Cy for his help in putting the banners on the second cart.

It was great fun. We have some other 100th birthday celebration things planned and we’ll share the details in the Sentinel and here on the blog.

Genii McRoberts

I remember Genii’s daughter coming in to the library asking if we needed a volunteer. Boy, did we!

Genii came in and helped us with cataloging and transferring all of our books from our old automated system to a new one. She worked hard, always with a sense of humor. Her dedication to books and libraries shows in the children’s room where she devised and implemented our color coding dots system.

She had wonderful stories that she shared with her grandchildren and occasionally she would show us what she had written. She joined the book club at the library and was unafraid to say what she really thought about a book even if it was contrary to what everyone else thought.

Genii died May 12. She was a good friend. I will miss her.

Discussion group planned

Please join us at the Pember Library for a new discussion group. Coffee, tea and cookies will be available for participants.

Those who come to our first discussion group will be able to decide when and how often they want to

meet and what topic(s) they would like to talk about.

Our first discussion will focus on Abraham Lincoln since 2009 marks 200 years since his birth. I will have several Lincoln books available before the group meets and we can request additional books after the meeting for those who want to read more.

Computer Classes

Our computer classes for seniors have filled up quickly. If you still want to take a class with Barb, call us at the library or send an email. We will put you on a waiting list. We are trying to come up with new ideas for funding and would like to be able to do the classes more often than we have been able to schedule them.

The Sap is Running

The fund-raiser was very successful using only 17 of the 30 buckets that were donated. Thank you to everyone for your continued support of the Pember.

Here are photos of the sap buckets donated to the Pember for the fund-raising auction which will be taking place at the Salem Court House on Saturday, March 28.

Only a portion of these will be in the auction on Saturday. The remaining buckets will be auctioned off at a later date as part of the Pember’s 100th anniversary celebration.

The auction begins at 6 PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash wine bar at 5PM. There is no admission fee but there will be a $2 paddle charge for those wishing to bid on the buckets.
