July 24 – Finances for Children. Theresa Macura from TD Bank will be here for a special story time and will explain the bank’s summer reading program. Get $10 for reading 10 books! (kids 18 and younger).
July 31 – Linda will have a “Make a Splash” program at this time.
Join us June 26 at 10:30 AM for the grand opening of the Pember Library’s PBS Kids Raising Readers Library Corner. The Pember Library has joined forces with WMHT through the NYS Ready To Learn Statewide Planning Project to install a special, permanent spot in the library that gives children and families the opportunity to strengthen literacy skills through fun, engaging multi-media platforms.
Representatives from WMHT will be at the library June 26 at 10:30 AM to demonstrate the library corner activities and to familiarize participants with PBS Island readytolearnreading.org, a Web site with games designed to help kids master literacy skills at eight different levels. The Web site measures and tracks a child’s progress and provides a report to the parent or caregiver.
The Library Corner materials are designed to help families with children ages 2 to 8 years develop early literacy and beginning reading skills and includes 30 interactive reading activities and materials featuring the friendly PBS characters children love, designed to provide an inviting place where children and their caregivers can explore words and letters together.
These activities are based on PBS KIDS Raising Readers programs Sesame Street, Word World, Super Why!, Between the Lions, Martha Speaks and The Electric Company.
The Pember Library was one of 27 in New York chosen to receive these national resources. The PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner will provide area kids with new opportunities to read and engage through hands-on activities.
All activities — including self-directed worksheets, online videos, parent-led activities, and more — are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations, encompassing skills such as letter recognition, print awareness, and vocabulary instruction.
This national literacy effort focuses on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care centers, and in the community.

The summer reading fun continues at the Pember Library with “The Splish Splash Reading Show” on July 1 at 6:00 PM. Join us as Domino the Great presents an action packed program that will grab the attention of children (and fun loving adults too) with amazing magic tricks, hilarious family-appropriate humor, tons of audience partici
pation, music and more.
Domino says, “This is not your ordinary magic show…” There are magic tricks throughout the program to capture and keep the attention of the kids. The tricks are used in a special way to teach the children about the fun of reading and signing up for our summer reading program.
Laughter is a sure fire way to insure success and get the kids in our community interested in books. A ton of side splitting and age-appropriate humor is used to keep the audience laughing and having a great time from start to finish.
Both boys and girls get to help make the “magic” happen during this explosion of fun, laughter and learning. One lucky beach bum (volunteer from the audience) will even get to float 3 feet in the air!

Public libraries across the State encourage reading through the New York Statewide Summer Reading Program. In 2010, Make a Splash @ Your Library will be the children’s theme. Linda has programs planned through July and a party in August for those who participate. Dawn will coordinate Make Waves @ Your Library, this year’s teen theme. The adult summer reading theme is Water Your Mind, Read. Detailed schedules for each program will be available at the Pember Library.

The Pember Library will present a lecture by Robert W. Arnold III on “Let Loose the Dogs of War: New York in the American Civil War”. Free and open to the general public, the event begins at 6:30 PM, Thursday, June 10 at the Pember Library in Granville. This event is made possible through Speakers in the Humanities, a program of the New York Council for the Humanities.
Robert W. Arnold III is a career public historian now retired from the New York State Archives. He was Albany County Historian and an historical archaeologist and serves as a Commissioner of Historic Resources for the City of Albany. Arnold teaches colonial and nineteenth century American, New York State, industrial revolution and preindustrial New York, and regional history at the College of Saint Rose. At Excelsior College Arnold teaches Colonial America, Revolutionary America, American Civil War and U.S. Immigration and Ethnic History.
New York supplied more men, money and material in the Civil War than any other state North or South, but New Yorkers responded to the Civil War in diverse and often contradictory fashions. Concentrating mainly on the home front, this presentation will examine a sample of those responses and some individuals who exemplify them, put in the political, social and military contexts of the war. It will look at the social costs of the war as they played out in the farms and cities of the Empire State, in families, workplaces and neighborhoods and the transition that went with it from an era of reform to the Gilded Age.
Since its launch in 1983, the Council’s Speakers in the Humanities program has linked distinguished scholars with a diverse audience through the presentation of lectures on a broad range of topics. All Speakers events are free and open to the general public. Each year, hundreds of cultural organizations and community groups take advantage of this program, which offers the very best in humanities scholarship to thousands of citizens in every corner of New York State.
The New York Council for the Humanities is a not-for-profit, independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Through statewide collaborations, and programs and services that encourage imaginative thinking and critical inquiry, the Council works to ensure that the humanities are present in the intellectual and cultural life of every New Yorker.
Splash into New York State Water Science will kick-off the kid’s Summer Reading Program at the Pember Library. Join us for this free program June 19 at 10:30 A. M. Space is limited! Call the Pember Library at 518 642-2525 to sign up.
Presenting the program is Carol Parenzan Smalley, a children’s author who has written creative nonfiction science materials for leading educational publishers, a teaching artist who creates programs for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the recipient of an environmental engineering degree (with the focus on water) from Penn State. In this 90-minute hands-on program, participants experience water with their senses. They perform an auditory rainmaking activity (while learning about the importance of water to all living things). They croak with the frogs (including the wood frog, the state amphibian) while creating their own musical notation system to record the sounds of nature. They explore the physics of water by devising a musical water xylophone (to accompany the frogs). They capture a moment of water time using haiku (based on the River of Words poetry project). And, they experiment with Gyotaku, the Japanese art of fish printing (with a replica of a trout, the state fish).

The annual Friends of the Pember Library Book Sale will take place at the Mary J Tanner School on Route 22 in Middle Granville Friday and Saturday, July 9 and 10, beginning at 9:00 A.M. each day. There will be thousands of books available. Most hardcover books will be $1.00 and paperbacks for $.25. Newer or special books will be individually priced. On Saturday from 1pm to 3 pm will be our $1.00 per bag sale using bags we provide.
Donate your gently used books to the library. Now is the time to clean out your shelves so you will have room for all the books you will find at our sale! Please, no encyclopedias, textbooks or books that are destined for the dump.
We are seeking volunteers for Wednesday, July 7 beginning at 9:00 A.M. to move the books from the Pember to the Mary Tanner School. We need strong backs and large vehicles. Wednesday and Thursday, we will be sorting the books and putting them out on tables.
Donations are accepted at any time the library is open. We are located at 33 West Main St in Granville. If you have large amounts of books to donate, it would be best to call ahead so we can have someone on hand to help unload your vehicle. For information, call 518 642-2525.
