Genealogist Lisa Alzo will present a two day workshop geared toward researching your Slovakian roots. Learn the skills necessary to do your own genealogical research. The workshop is a collaborative partnership with the Slate Valley Museum. She will be at the Slate Museum on Saturday August 17th at 10 am. Did you know that more than two million genealogy-related sites exist on the Web? Computer use and the rise of the Internet have encouraged the already growing interest in genealogy, dramatically changing the manner in which research is done. This talk will present methods for identifying and searching the most popular online databases and websites, and will include tips and tricks to narrow your searches for names, vital record and other documents. An overview of the most popular online databases (free and fee-based) will be provided.

In recent years, interest in Slovak and Carpatho-Rusyn genealogy has greatly increased thanks to easier access to records, visits to the homeland, and use of the Internet, among others. This session will provide an overview of how to find your Slovak and Rusyn ancestors, including what sources (traditional and online) to consult, how to identify and locate the ancestral village, the similarities and differences between the two groups, and tips for networking with other researchers. Key strategies for overcoming the most common “brick walls” will also be discussed.
