This is Alice Merrill. She’s still in high school back in Grinnell. She works part-time at “Lil’ Miss Chic Boutique” and is saving her money to go to college to become a journalist. She belongs to the newspaper club at school, likes to go camping and is teaching herself to crochet.
She tells me that all her life people have been saying she looks just like Ariel. She doesn’t see the resemblance.

The Dahl family and their cousins wish they could be home to celebrate Mother’s Day as they usually do but, with the many social limitations of this pandemic, they decided to do a Zoom call to their moms in Iowa.
Many of us will need to do the same and plan times in the future when we get together safely with our families. In the meantime, share here what you plan to do that’s special for your mom even if you can only be with her virtually.
Maybe you can play her this Beatles’ song, “Your Mother Should Know.”

Ruth and David have been playing chess against each other for years. They are pretty evenly matched. They really like our glass chess set but wonder why we don’t have a 3D set.
Marie is very proud of the little bench she built using our Keva Planks.
Grace and Eliza never get tired of playing Connect 4. These are just some of the games available at the Pember.

If you have visited the Museum, then you know that there’s no “monkeying” around in there, but that didn’t stop David! Poor Lemur. Oh by the way, a Lemur is not a monkey. Lemurs are prosimians. Whoa!

Look guys! These books are written by Roald Dahl. Didn’t Grammy say we were related somehow to this guy? Like fourth cousin two times removed, whatever that means? I just love Charlie & the Chocolate Factory!

Marie visited the Museum today and exclaimed “Oh my, what big teeth you have!” Wait Marie, It’s NOT the Big Bad Wolf, it’s a Grizzly Bear! (skull and fur) What is a Grizzly Bear? Well, the Grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis) is a subspecies of the brown bear inhabiting North America. It is also known as the North American brown bear. Brown bears have a muscular hump on their shoulders while the black bear doesn’t. They are western bears, so you won’t find them in NY state! There is lots of information on the Net about the Grizzly. Perhaps Marie might do some research.

Ella loves horses.
She wondered if Grandpa Mike had horses? We couldn’t really find any information either way on that but we found these pictures in our local history section. Here’s Ella inspecting the photo of William Hicks, a blacksmith with a shop on Church Street.
Also from the Morris Rote-Rosen collection of photographs was this picture of a group of Granville folks at the horse races at the Cambridge fair. There’s Bert Braymer, whose name is commemorated by Braymer Mountain and the Braymer Monument.
We found a 2003 Granville Sentinel article about the monument. Ella loves history as well as horses and she was thrilled with the info we found.

Ruth reminded me that today is Star Wars day. She told me the story of going to the drive-in when she was attending the University of Iowa in 1977. She said “I can’t tell you how fun it was watching Skywalker blow up the Death Star on a big screen under a sky full of glittering stars!”
So we had a showing of the original Star Wars movie this morning and I boasted about the Star Wars games we have. They loved the crazy sounds the Star Wars Operation game makes; I love C3POs voice offering to donate his circuits.
David was curious about the Star Wars Origami book. “You mean if I fold this according to the directions, it will look just like the Millennium Falcon?”

Ruth disappeared for a while and I finally found her out near our tower garden. I’m still not sure how she opened the door to the elevator area. Maybe Lucy helped her? Anyway, she was smelling the wonderful basil we have and complaining about not having a caprese salad for a long time.
We have arugula, bibb lettuce, some basil, swiss chard, and a few other greens growing here. It was wonderful over the winter to have fresh lettuce for a salad. “Well; how does it work? I don’t see any dirt.” There isn’t any. The barrel at the bottom holds water that we add nutrients to. Jodie keeps track of what it needs and currently has some seeds started at home. There is a pump that runs water through the system for 15 minutes every hour. It has a good amount of light where we have placed it. Some of the veggies grow back after we cut them and some need to have new seeds planted.
I showed Ruth where some books about gardening are located in the library and she claims she is going to get to work on her own garden when she returns to Iowa.

Grace works at the Grinnell-Newburg CSD. She is the advisor for their yearbook committee so she was interested in looking through the Blue & Gold we have available at the Pember. We have yearbooks from 1948 through 2013 missing only 2001 and 2004. Grace asked me to show her the 1948 yearbook to see how much had changed in 70+ years. We love this page with the collage. Is that Rosie in that pic?
This is Eliza and Hannah Dahl and their brother David, home on leave. They are visiting here from Grinnell, Iowa. Michael Dahl, their grandfather, grew up here in Granville. There was quite a large farm somewhere on the outskirts and they have some questions about exactly where it might have been or if we might have photos.
Joining them on this tour are their cousins Ella & Marie Davis and Jennie & Ruth Kent as well as their cousin Grace Thurber and her niece Alice Merrill.
Since we are currently closed due to the CoVid-19 pandemic, it is a perfect time to allow families like the Dahls and their cousins to tour the library and museum.
For the month of May, we will be showing the Dahl family around and will be sharing pictures of their discoveries.
