Book club
A Long and Happy Life, by Reynolds Price, is a story of North Carolina rural life featuring Rosacoke Mustain as she grows into a young woman. The story examines themes of love, identity and birth.
To think about while reading:
- The people in this novel live in a rural area with electric lights and telephones, but they possess not much more in the way of modern conveniences. How would the story have been different if they had the technology available today?
- A leech attaches to Wesley’s leg when he is swimming in Mason’s Lake. What kind of leeches are found in North Carolina? What are their habits? What other species are found around the country?
- At the Christmas pageant, Rosacoke smells paregoric on the baby’s breath. What various potions and elixirs have people given babies throughout history: what are other popular methods for quieting them?
- Research some of the songs of mourning that you think may have been sung at Mildred Sutton’s funeral.
- Were you surprised to find the casual friendships between blacks and whites portrayed in this novel?

One of my favorite books, Jane Eyre, is being made into a movie again!
I watched the clip from the movie that is included as part of this review and it looks like it is going to be every bit as good as the George C. Scott version that is my favorite.

- Enter your library card number. There are several ways to search. To get to a specific title, browse by publication, type in the title you are looking for and choose your title. (I searched for “Consumer Reports”) There are ways to limit your search.
- In the left column here, you can search within the publication. (I entered “vacuum cleaner” and limited to full text articles. I got 41 hits; many of these are citations or abstracts but for what I want, March 2009 has an article: Vacuums: we found CR Best Buys for as little as $170. ) So for now, I am looking for either a Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition U6485-900 or a Kenmore Progressive.

Granville Women ~ Their Story
On Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Pember Library, Town Historian Edith Sparling will present “Granville Women — Their Story” – a show and tell about the life of an acclaimed local photographer, an artist and writer, a nationally honored Cornell graduate, and a community- minded woman whose wealth and generosity have enriched Granvilie.
Sparling will speak about Nellie Sykes Lewis, Nina Van Shaik Butler, Stella Wilson Butler, Lydia Beulah Independence Jones, and Ellen Wood Pember and exhibit artifacts of their times, one being an 1890s glass plate camera.
The Granville Heritage Society will hold a brief annual meeting following the program, which is open to the public.
