As the economy continues its slump, libraries nationwide continue to play an important role in communities everywhere, as people turn to them for free entertainment, to connect to the Internet and look for jobs. This spring, the Pember Library, the American Library Association (ALA) and Woman’s Day magazine want to hear your thoughts on why the library is important to your community.
From now until May 9, women ages 18 and over can submit their story in 700 words or less to womansday@ala.org. Up to four stories will be featured in the March 2011 issue of Woman’s Day or on womansday.com. Official rules are available on the Woman’s Day Web site at womansday.com/ala.
“People of all ages and backgrounds come to the library to work on resumes, gather for book discussions, attend story time with their children, get help with homework, check out books or movies or just spend time together. With so many resources for everyone, the library is truly the heart of the community,” said library clerk Jo-ann Nadeau.

This initiative was developed by Woman’s Day magazine and the Campaign for America’s Libraries, ALA’s public awareness campaign that promotes the value of libraries and librarians.

The knit-in continues!
One ‘lapghan’ is complete. I have the panels for two more; they just need to be sewn together. I will post photos when they are done. Three will be donated to the Haynes House and the fourth will be raffled off at the library.
We plan to work on ‘chemo hats’ next with some patterns available at the library. Of course, everyone is welcome to come in and work on their own project and just chat with the other folks. We usually have someone here who can help if you find yourself stuck on directions or your pattern just doesn’t look right. Alice is working on a knitted baby afghan. Johanna finished a baby sweater and is working on an afghan for herself. I’m working on a crocheted baby afghan with hexagon grannies. Peggy is making chemo hats.
Come learn about and experience space travel, sunspots, craters on the moon, the planets, star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies.
Astrophysicist Kevin Manning, a former consultant with NASA, has always been passionate about astronomy, and wants to share the excitement with you! Learn about the size and scale of the universe, the stars, and other celestial wonders.

Wiley Publishing has an annual display contest. They ask participating libraries to create a black and yellow eye-catching display showcasing ‘dummies’ titles. The reward is greater circulation of titles in this popular series and the chance to win For Dummies books for the library’s collection, as well as a trophy and a pizza party for the staff!
Some of the older titles have the phrase: “a reference for the rest of us.” The new slogan is “making everything easier.”
The photos here are the ones we entered in the contest. 
The books from the display will be available for checkout after April 1.
This was a lot of fun to create.
