Knit-In
It is taking me longer than planned to put together the panels for the “lapghans.” As usual, there are too many other obligations…
We will continue to provide a space for those who want to get together with their yarn projects, get a little help or some encouragement, or maybe just have a chat while you are working. Alice is working on another baby afghan, Peggy is making more chemo hats and I am still on the same granny afghan.
Computers for Seniors
Barb Young will be teaching another session of computer classes for Senior Citizens (age 49 or over) at the Pember Library. Classes will run from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Mondays and Fridays from May 10 through May 28.
Classes will cover internet and email, word processing, and using the library card catalog with databases.
You must pre-register for the series of classes. Class size is limited to eight people. Please call the library to register or for more information 518-642-2525.
Please be aware that the library is closed during these class times.

Did you know?
Sometimes you learn new things just by accident. I have been using the computer or online card catalog for the Pember since about 1994. It has changed several times during those years. I tried to look up some books a couple of weeks ago for a library theme and got way too many hits to comfortably sift through so I looked at advanced settings (which is “Open Search Options” under the search boxes).
I can narrow down my search by specific library, target audience, material types, collections, languages, and publication date. I knew all that, but there’s a small box at the bottom right that I had missed before: “miscellaneous options.” You can display 10, 20, 30, 50, or 100 results per page! This can give you one or two pages of search results rather than 10 or 20. I’m aware that there are the same number of results but it feels easier to look at one page of 100 rather than ten pages of ten.
Pember Board Meeting / Friends of the Library Meeting
A meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Pember Library and Museum will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Pember. This is a regular meeting and open to the public.
This month the Friends of the Library will be guests of the Pember Board. After meeting together, each group will have a separate meeting.
What are you reading?
I needed something to read when I went to the doctor’s office the other day so I grabbed the paperback “Poisoned Pins,” a Claire Malloy mystery by Joan Hess. I have read other mysteries by Joan Hess and enjoyed them.
Claire has a teen-aged daughter and they both seem to have attitude. There is some humor, and a bit of a mystery. I’m about half way through this and I think I know whodunit. The teenage daughter is overly dramatic and I’m not fond of the way Claire treats her romantic interest. But I will finish the story and try to find one that “hooks” me better from the start.

Book Club
The Pember Book Club will be reading Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls. Join us for a discussion about a book listed as “true life novel.” The subject of the book is the author’s maternal grandmother. Walls set out to tell the story of this grandmother as a biography but found that she needed to fill in too many places for it to be really nonfiction.
