To all our readers with Kindles or Kindle apps,

The Library has just learned from a blog post on the Library Journal website that the publisher, Penguin Group USA, is no longer making available for public library users any Kindle format eBooks (article available here). Kindle format editions of Penguin eBook titles had recently been made available to Southern Adirondack Library System (SALS) users through the Library’s OverDrive platform.

SALS received no notification of this fact before it was implemented by Overdrive and Penguin USA. OverDrive has confirmed the details, stating on its Digital Library blog that the company was “instructed to suspend availability of new Penguin eBook titles from Library catalogs and disable Get for Kindle functionality for all Penguin eBooks.”

What this news means to SALS customers is that holds on Kindle format eBooks published by Penguin Group cannot be fulfilled at this time. We are hoping that in the near future OverDrive can restore access to Kindle editions of Penguin USA titles. EPUB and PDF versions of Penguin USA titles do remain available through the Overdrive platform and holds can be fulfilled in these formats. The Library apologizes for this service disruption for Kindle eBook users and we will provide additional information as it is received.

UPDATE:

November 23:

‘Get for Kindle’ for all Penguin eBooks in your catalog has been restored.  Penguin titles are available for check out by Kindle users and the Kindle format will be available for patrons who are currently on a waiting list for a Penguin title. This does not affect new releases, which remain unavailable.

Quilling Class

Pat O will teach us more quilling or feel free to join us if you have a project you are working on and just like to chat while you are crafting.

Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. Pre-registration is not required, materials provided. Beginners welcome. For information, call 518-642-2525.

Holiday Book Sale

Mark your calendars now for the second annual Friends of the Pember Library Holiday Book Sale. The sale will be held Saturday, December 3, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Pember Library, 33 West Main St. in Granville. Just in time for holiday shopping, we’ll have a selection of gift-quality books for the book lover on your holiday shopping list.

Prices will range from $1.00 and up. There will be new or nearly new items including fiction, nonfiction, childrens’ books, oversize/coffee table books, and other gift-able items. Stop by for some great deals on books just in time for the holidays! All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Pember Library.

Pember Presents: Joyful Traditions!

This program was scheduled for last December and we are finally able to bring it to you!

Join us at the Pember Library November 20 at 2:00 PM for Joyful Traditions: How the Dutch Brought Us Santa, Presents and Treats. In this slide-accompanied lecture, food historian Peter G. Rose delves into the early history of the life of Saint Nicholas; explains the various changes in his veneration; and relates how he was brought to America by the Dutch in the 17th century, and again, transformed into Santa in the 19th century. The talk encompasses such subjects as literature, religion, the fine arts, and Dutch food ways to describe the extraordinary story of Saint Nicholas’ generosity, which has had a lasting impact on American culture.

Ms. Rose is an author, columnist, lecturer, and food historian. She has lectured on a variety of topics related to Dutch-American culinary history at, among others: The Smithsonian Institute, the National Gallery of Art, the Culinary Institute of America, New York University, and the New York Historical Society, as well as many other historical societies and libraries in New York State.

Making Ends Meet

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Washington County will present a 2-hour Money Management Workshop at the Pember Library.

Come share some ideas on:

  • setting financial goals
  • getting the most for your money
  • developing a spending plan
  • ways to reduce your utility bills

All attendees will receive an assortment of money management tools.

The two-hour class will be presented twice on November 16.

Have you read Margaret Mitchell’s books? or seen the movie Gone with the Wind? I first read the book in December 1969 and have reread it a couple of times. I also love the movie which I first saw in a drive-in probably in the ’70s.
