Pember Library and Museum to Honor Veterans in November

The Pember’s November First Friday Event, November 3rd, will be in honor of our veterans. In the Main Area of the library we will be displaying various forms of “art” created by veterans, in the Children’s Room we will be showing Ken Burns’ film “The Vietnam War”, and we will also have music from various war eras.

We are currently in search of any and all “artistic” veterans who would like to have their art showcased for a period of two weeks. For those interested there is also an opportunity to sell said “art” (see staff for details). First Friday ~ Zombie Walk

8PM Zombie Walk down Main Street to the SVMThe night air is getting chillier and Halloween is just around the corner…The Pember Library and Museum and the Slate Valley Museum are teaming up again, this time to host their Fourth Annual Halloween Party and Zombie Walk. ZOMBIE WALK IV will take place during the October First Friday event, October 6, from 7 to 9 pm at both museums.

“Last year’s Zombie Walk was a tremendous hit, with over 500 people turning out,” said Krista Rupe, Slate Valley Museum Executive Director and Zombie Queen . “We’re aiming for a million Zombies to emerge this year. The Slate valley Museum will host them all at our Grand Monster Mash Zombie Ball. There will also be Halloween art, special music, treats, creepy décor and other terrifying surprises to die for.”

At the Pember, mayhem will prevail from 7 to 8 PM, with ghouls overrunning the building to live music – both inside and on the front lawn. Stephen Havel, Mark Catman and Cole Kitz will be playing the strange and weird to satisfy ghoulish cravings. Of course Zombie cuisine such as “finger” sandwiches, jelly eyeballs, bloody punch, and other delicacies of the undead will be provided. Make-up stations will be available to help everyone look his worst.

“Zombies are the future. We know you are out there and we welcome you!” says Pember Field Commander Sparkle Head G. “This is your night and we are honored to serve you.”

“Halloween, originated from Ireland. Immigrant children would decorate their faces with soot and dress up to scare the new arrivals to the neighborhood.” said Molly Biggs Celani SVM Board President.

Festivities begin at 7pm inside and in front of the Pember, culminating in the 8pm walk down Main and River Streets to the extravaganza of the undead at the Slate Valley Museum.

First Friday is always free.

Music of the Erie Canal Saturday 2PM

“A Mule Named Sal”: Music of the Erie Canal

Erie Canal music in an old slate mining and farming town! I’m looking forward to this visit, sponsored by Humanities NY and their wonderful Public Scholars program.

The Pember will also be displaying a traveling Erie Canal exhibit.

Here’s a description of the program…

Dave Ruch has spent the last fifteen years searching for Erie Canal music beyond the grade-school favorite “Low Bridge, Everybody Down,” and among other things, discovered that America’s favorite Erie Canal song was never sung on the canal!

In this lecture/concert, Ruch presents music from canal diggers, barge workers, immigrants, lake sailors, mule drivers, canal boat captains, and yes, professional songwriters who all contributed to the musical and cultural life surrounding the canal. With banjo, bones, spoons, washboard, jaw harp, mandolin and more, Ruch presents a highly engaging program of stories, music, history and anecdotes about life on “Clinton’s Ditch,” and the importance of the Erie Canal to the growth of New York City and the nation.

Introducing “Flat Frank”

FLAT FRANK made his debut at the annual dinner September 25, 2017.

Franklin Pember was a businessman in Granville in the early 20th century. He was an entrepreneur, naturalist and philanthropist. He founded the Pember Library and Museum of Natural History. Pember also constructed the Pember Opera House and provided land for the community sewer systems.

Granville has continued to grow in the last century. To help the people of Granville and surrounding areas learn more about our community, we have created “Flat Frank”.

“Flat Frank” will visit different places in Granville and learn about businesses and other places of interest in the area. “Flat Frank” can visit with you for a week or so and you can photograph him doing whatever it is you do and help him answer a (small) series of questions. The photos and information will be added to a web page or FaceBook page (yet to be created). We can create a space in the library with pictures of those who participate in the “Flat Frank” project.

We hope that “Flat Frank” will visit the town and village offices, some of the slate companies, have lunch at local restaurants or a drink in the pub. He can visit a doctor’s office, attend churches, camp out with the scouts, and attend Rotary trivia night. Maybe he can go to the grand opening of a new restaurant or the brewery on Main Street. There is plenty going on in the Granville area to keep him busy.

Pennies for Pember nearing goal

We started collecting pennies in June 2014 with a goal of collecting one million pennies. Other coins, bills, and checks were all donated to the “Penny Jar.” This proves that even the smallest donations can make a difference. Thank you to all who help.
