Join us June 26 at 10:30 AM for the grand opening of the Pember Library’s PBS Kids Raising Readers Library Corner. The Pember Library has joined forces with WMHT through the NYS Ready To Learn Statewide Planning Project to install a special, permanent spot in the library that gives children and families the opportunity to strengthen literacy skills through fun, engaging multi-media platforms.

Representatives from WMHT will be at the library June 26 at 10:30 AM to demonstrate the library corner activities and to familiarize participants with PBS Island readytolearnreading.org, a Web site with games designed to help kids master literacy skills at eight different levels. The Web site measures and tracks a child’s progress and provides a report to the parent or caregiver.

The Library Corner materials are designed to help families with children ages 2 to 8 years develop early literacy and beginning reading skills and includes 30 interactive reading activities and materials featuring the friendly PBS characters children love, designed to provide an inviting place where children and their caregivers can explore words and letters together.

These activities are based on PBS KIDS Raising Readers programs Sesame Street, Word World, Super Why!, Between the Lions, Martha Speaks and The Electric Company.

The Pember Library was one of 27 in New York chosen to receive these national resources. The PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner will provide area kids with new opportunities to read and engage through hands-on activities.

All activities — including self-directed worksheets, online videos, parent-led activities, and more — are based on an existing literacy framework that has its foundation in the National Reading Panel recommendations, encompassing skills such as letter recognition, print awareness, and vocabulary instruction.

This national literacy effort focuses on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care centers, and in the community.
