Pember presents a series of eight programs about America. This is intended for elementary school age children. Books, videos and and an activity will accompany each program.

Summer Reading

Saturday is the summer reading program kick-off. This year’s theme is Be Creative @ Your Library.

A storyteller on July 2 is also part of the summer program.  See the post about Karen Pillsworth and Stone Soup. Children and teens can sign up at either of these programs or come in to the library during regular hours to sign up.

Linda has programs planned through July and a party in August for those who participated.  The teen program will be described in a later post.

Summer Reading Programs are Fun and Promote Literacy!

Public libraries across the State encourage reading through the New York Statewide Summer Reading Program. In 2009, kids can Be Creative @ Your Library! Artwork is by children’s book illustrator David Catrow. The teen theme, Express Yourself @ Your Library, features artwork by illustrator Brad Sneed.

Children and families visit public libraries to choose what they want to read as part of a summertime mix of activities. Research shows that children who read during the summer perform better when school resumes in the fall. Kids participate in summer reading fun at their local libraries, and the numbers are growing — in 2008, a record 1.5 million participated.

The New York State Library participates in the national Collaborative Summer Library Program with 46 other member states. The theme, high-quality artwork, and educational activities attract kids to the summer reading program at their local library. The State Library provides the Summer Reading Program manual with creative ideas, projects and reading lists to over 1,100 public libraries, branch libraries and reading centers in New York State.

“Listen…and you will hear stories from long ago and far away, and stories from today, as we go on an adventure into a world where friends are made and magic abounds. Some stories will find us in magical places and some will happen right in your backyard.

“Listen…and I will take you on a voyage of discovery into a place where time stands still and happily ever after is still a possibility.

“Come with me — I will take you there!”

Karen Pillsworth has been enchanting audiences all over the Northeast with her stories for over 25 years. She has performed in libraries, camps, churches, parks, schools, historic sites and at festivals. She is regularly featured at Mohonk Mountain House and has shared her stories on National Public Radio.

Thursday Tall Tales

We will have an early evening Thursday Tall Tales program as well as our new Fireside Story Time on Saturdays.

The scouts from Girl Scout Troop 3218 will be the hosts for four Story Times in April and May. Jo-ann will be reading for  the other Thursday Tall Tales programs.

Look forward to stories using a flannel board and puppets. We also have one program planned which will be a sing-a-long.

It isn’t necessary to register for the programs. For additional information, call the library (642-2525) or ask at the desk.

Fireside Story Time

Join us on Saturday mornings for Fireside Story Time.  Pat O, MaryLou O, and Robyn L will each host one of the story times in March. Anyone else who would like to volunteer some time to read to the children, please give a call to the library and we will work you in to our schedule.

Stories will be read near the fireplace in the main room with plenty of room for children and their caregivers to sit on the floor nearby.  We look forward to you joining us!

Story time this week will feature Pets.

Children will have a chance to draw their favorite pet to be entered into our contest to win a long-arm monkey or bobcat. Adults can try to match Pember people with their pets to win a copy of the book “Dewey” by Vicki Myron.

Pember Presents: FUNance

Fun and Finance Collide at the Pember Library

The kids yell and point as Brad Zupp attempts to keep eight plates spinning on top of poles. Running from plate to plate, he illustrates, in a way kids can easily understand, the financial concept of needs versus wants. “Kids love learning about how to be smart with money,” Zupp says. A former clown with Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus and former financial planner, he devised a 45 minute program that teaches personal finance to students in grades K-6. “But it’s not a boring lecture,” he adds. “Every concept is explained and made entertaining with comedy, magic, lots of audience participation, and circus skills like plate spinning and juggling.” Since the kids are being entertained while learning, they are more likely to both grasp and retain the lessons, he says.

Brad Zupp will bring to life financial concepts like the importance of saving, budgeting, needs versus wants, living within your means and more during his performance of “FUNance For Kids – Where Fun and Finance Collide” at 6:30 PM Thursday, February 26 in the main  room of the Pember Library.

At age 17, Zupp was one of the youngest people ever to attend Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus Clown College. After graduating, he spent two years touring with The Greatest Show On Earth. Since then, he has performed for over twenty years, on cruise ships and theme parks around the world, as well as at hundreds of schools and libraries. He also worked for three years with A.G. Edwards and Sons as a financial planner, helping people plan and prepare for their retirement years. “I found that there was a real lack of knowledge about basic personal finance,” he says, even among retirees and pre-retirees. “I realized that my skills as a performer and a financial planner were pretty unique, and could be combined to help the next generation better prepare for their financial future.” Zupp left the comfort of the office for the challenge of entertaining kids while teaching them important – and abstract – financial concepts. “Standing in front of hundreds of kids with the responsibility to make sure they learn how to be smart with money, but without boring them, is a challenge I love.”

This performance is part of the Pember Library’s Pember Presents Program, which will bring a variety of local and regional guests to the Pember and provide educational and cultural programs for the residents of Granville and the surrounding area.

The February 26 performance by Brad Zupp is intended for children in kindergarten through sixth grades and their families, and is sponsored by the Pember Library and a grant from the Leo Cox Beach Foundation.
